Pause For Thought
Well I know it’s a few days ago now but I’m still riding the crest of the wave from last weekend’s Glastonbury festival. I mean I wasn’t actually there but I was able to get a flavour of the festival in my own front room especially when I rigged up the big speakers to the telly and kept our kids awake until the early hours by singing and embarrassingly, dancing along to the best of it on the red button. It was loud and if I’m honest I rather forgot myself. Wasn’t it great to see all those people young and old having such an amazing time?Ìý It reminded me of that line from Spinal Tap ‘turning it up to eleven’. Standard amplifiers go up to 10 but the phrase turning it up to eleven has come to mean living life to the max, why stop at the standard 10 volume when 11 could be so much more? There were more than a few people in that field in Somerset last weekend embodying that and turning it up to 11, living life to the max.
In my line of work I hear wonderful stories of amazing people who have done just that. Turning life up to 11. The 60 year old bloke part of the vintage motorbike club, racing bikes through the Sahara and back, the 70 year old asking for a skydive experience for Christmas and my great friend Jean who in her 80’s was disappointed when the driving instructor for her birthday treat on a race track wouldn’t let her push the beautiful Lotus past 90 on the straight, ‘Well,’ she announced, ‘What was the point if he wasn’t going to let me see just how fast it could go?’
Turning life up to eleven, stretching and squeezing the best out of the time we have, living life to the max.
Jesus was big on bounties of blessing, turning water into wine at a wedding and providing more food than was needed at the feeding of the 5 thousand, he also said ‘I have come that you might have life and have it in all its fullness’ not a green light for hedonism but an encouragement that even if life gives you lemons to squeeze every last drop out of it you can, life in all its fullness.
Can’t we do Glastonbury again this weekend?
