Pause For Thought
From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:
Disease and natural disaster are well-known, long-standing killers of humankind. There鈥檚 another culprit that鈥檚 less obvious but equally lethal: Certainty 鈥 the kind which some people across time have felt permits or demands them to diminish, dehumanise or destroy those who don鈥檛 share their convictions. The murders of holidaymakers in Tunisia and people at prayer in Kuwait are tragic examples of this. Our hearts go out to those grieving as a result. They鈥檙e among countless numbers suffering today because of the violence of blind certainty in our world. Contrary to popular belief, it鈥檚 not a characteristic unique to any one community. It鈥檚 found among atheists as well as people who believe in God. It鈥檚 present in political movements and across cultures. It鈥檚 evident in the actions of individuals and countries who consider themselves civilised. It鈥檚 played out on a world stage and in our own backyards. A minister whose national Church had made a decision he deplored, announced to his congregation that, in response, he would be leaving. As he stood at the door at the end of the service a wise woman who had travelled the world, worked at the rock-face of human suffering and seen many clergy come and go patted his arm and said 鈥淚 hope you鈥檒l think again, dear 鈥 don鈥檛 be like Hitler, thinking you鈥檙e the only one who鈥檚 right!鈥 She stands as a beacon of hope for me in a world where far too many claim to have the Truth and go on to commit terrible acts of violence as a result. In dark times we need to nurture this hope and to find ways of celebrating the joys of life. Yesterday at Glastonbury the Dalai Lama spoke of hope as 鈥榯he basis of our lives.鈥 I share his wider philosophy that, 鈥極ur prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them鈥y religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.鈥
