Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Art Historian, Dr Jim Harris

聽I was going to talk about holidays today: about the magnificent John Lubbock, who, in 1871, introduced the Bank Holidays Act to fix national holidays in the working calendar and about how the Sabbath, one day鈥檚 rest in seven, shows that even God recognises we all need a break sometimes.

聽Instead, my producer reminded me that a certain royal baby had been born 鈥 you might have heard - suggesting I might like to say something about that instead.聽 鈥榃hat鈥檚 your advice,鈥 he asked, 鈥榯o new parents of girls?鈥

聽I emailed back.聽 鈥楽tart worrying.聽 Never stop鈥.聽 I was nearly joking.

聽I have two daughters.聽 They are magnificent.聽 My first, Miriam, is at University.聽 She鈥檚 the most stylish person I know and is smarter than me. My second, Esther, turns eighteen on Thursday and will vote for the first time.聽聽 She鈥檚 also smart and stylish. But I remember smart, magnificent Esther slipping on the steps of a slide and me cycling her to hospital bleeding from a cut beside her eye.聽 I remember smart, magnificent Miriam getting her hand caught between two flip-up seats at Lord鈥檚 and me taking her sprained wrist to hospital for an x-ray.

聽I remember ear infections, split eyebrows, and broken teeth.聽 I remember rolled eyes, slammed doors and 鈥業 hate yous鈥.聽 And that鈥檚 before any of the more traditional concerns of parents with girls.

聽What we long for, for sons as well as daughters, is not to worry and instead to be able to give them everything they need so that those events will be memories, and eventually funny memories, and won鈥檛 define them, or our relationships with them.

聽In the Bible, St James writes that, 鈥楨very good and perfect gift comes from the Father of Lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.鈥櫬 So my real advice, after 鈥橲tart worrying and never stop鈥, would be to remember that the best gifts you can give a child, the good and perfect gifts, are not the ones you can buy, but the ones accessible to every parent, that come from being constant, not shifting like shadows.聽 Be there.聽 Be the static point and let your children find in your constancy the good and perfect gifts Christians believe we find in our heavenly Father of Lights: kindness, faithfulness, peace, forgiveness and above all, love.
