Episode 1
Documentary following life on the English Channel. A giant car carrier is grounded on a sandbank in the Solent, while a premature baby seal prepares to return to the water.
A giant car carrier, the Heogh Osaka, is grounded on a sandbank in the Solent. Rescuing the 25 souls on board at night is a challenge for the RNLI volunteers from Calshot. It is also a testing time for the tug crews and Southampton harbour patrol, who work day and night to keep the Osaka in position and this busy shipping route open for business and who play a key role in finally bringing the Osaka safely back into port.
Meanwhile, in Southampton docks, the 38 million tonnes of cargo that comes through the port every year needs to be loaded and unloaded as quickly as possible by the dockside team. One of its employees is facing a driving test with a difference, as he hopes to qualify to operate the 40-foot straddle carriers that move containers around the port.
Plus a premature baby seal which was washed up on the beach has bounced back after some intensive care from the RSPCA team in Hastings - but will he be able to make it out past the breakers and back into the Channel?
