Script

Good morning

On this day when Saint George of England slays his mythical dragon, the virus causing HIV AIDS was discovered in 1984, paving the way for a long and continuing production of anti AIDS and retroviral drug regimes. In spite of these advances, HIV AIDS remains a major health risk for the population of the world today, particularly, but not only, in parts of Africa.

In the 30 or so years since AIDS entered public consciousness attitudes towards it 鈥 and those who contract it 鈥 have changed enormously and very largely for the good. Thankfully gone are the days when it was considered simply a Gay disease, resulting in the further discrimination of victims, when 鈥 abominably - even some Christian ministers, refusing to enter the hospital rooms in which dying victims lay, shouted condemnatory prayers that God would yet save 鈥減rodigal sinners.鈥

Yet the situation today remains tragic in some parts of the world. So many HIV AIDS victims are children, infected from birth: children of parents themselves with the virus: children almost alone in the world because of the ravages of the virus, whole communities misshapen from generation to generation.

Saint George鈥檚 dragon was mythical: this enemy remains horribly real, and lurks, beneath and beyond a whole host of other pandemics that come and then go. So the fight must continue.
God of compassion, so many of your children are worn down by sickness, suffering and stigma. Help us to make real the vision that Jesus spoke of as 鈥榯he kingdom of God鈥, where justice reigns and tears are wiped from every eye. Amen.
