Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Vicky Beeching Theologian, Writer and Broadcaster:

Right now in the UK it鈥檚 Anti-bullying Week - 7 days, once a year when young people, schools, parents and carers come together with a single aim: to stop bullying. Resources are given out to help kids become aware of vulnerable classmates and to outlaw negative words and name-calling.

The names we hear at school can have a powerful impact on us for our entire lives. From the age of 11 to 18 I attended a school just for girls. It was a great place, but other children in our city teased us saying that because we were a single-sex school, we must all be gay. They shouted 鈥榞ay girls鈥 at us every afternoon as we caught the bus home. This really affected me because from the age of 13 I had a growing awareness that I was gay, and this name-calling was one of the things that made me feel ashamed of that.

For many reasons, I wasn鈥檛 able to accept -听 or even talk about - that aspect of myself until 22 years later, when I turned 35. That was this past summer when I did an interview with a UK newspaper and finally talked openly about my sexuality. Since then it's been brilliant to feel able to be myself at last. My journey鈥檚 a reminder that what we say to one another at school really shapes us - for better or worse.听

Each of us is created to be totally unique, so we should never be ashamed about who we are. Ralph Waldo Emerson summed this up beautifully, saying: 鈥淭o be yourself in a world that鈥檚 constantly trying to make you something else, is the greatest accomplishment.鈥澨

St Paul wrote about this in the New Testament, saying that each of us are God鈥檚 鈥榟andiwork鈥. The Greek word for 鈥榟andiwork鈥 is 鈥榩oeima鈥 which gives us the English word 鈥榩oem鈥. So the translation could be that each of us are 鈥楪od鈥檚 poem鈥; written by his hands and his heart, designed to be exactly who we are.

Truly accepting and loving ourselves can take a lifetime, especially if we鈥檝e had harsh words spoken over us. So during anti-bullying week and beyond let鈥檚 use our words to speak love, acceptance and life to those around us, reminding each other that we are all unique, irreplaceable and of great worth.
