Pause for Thought
From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:
I was listening to you this morning while I was getting ready to come here and when you talked about the Dirty Dozen package up for auction I thought of that day – was it four years ago? – when I was the lucky Pauser who came to your home to Pause for Thought and then bless those fantastic cars and wave them off.
For a moment, I was right there; the smell of petrol and excitement, everyone smiling and dressed up ready to go, the bacon roll which somehow tasted different in the open air and then you got me to sit up on the back bit of one of those cars and you made it roar. And surrounding it all, was the poignancy of our cause. What an amazing day that was and it all came back to me – our memories are so important to us.
And today, at 11 o’clock, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we will take just two minutes to remember; we’ll call to mind the stories of those we know and some of what we’ve seen and read about the people who fought and died, and those whose lives were for ever changed, in the wars and conflicts of this past century.
My Dad was ten when his home on the Isle of Dogs was bombed; thank God no-one was hurt but, in the panic, they left the trophies that my granddad had won playing football for Millwall, and instead took odd bits and pieces from the kitchen and carried them to Dagenham where his eldest sister lived. I can’t imagine the fear and horror that stayed in that boy’s mind all his life.
It’s painful to remember - but we must, even when the terrible suffering and tragedy caused by war leaves us feeling helpless and hopeless.
Surely there is only one response worthy of those people who we bring to mind today; the promise that we will do all we can to work for peace and abundant life for all of God’s creation.
