Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor:

Some years ago I had the privilege of having lunch with The Queen Mother who was then aged about 101.ÌýÌý During the course of the lunch we started talking about songs of the Second World War which we knew, mentioning those old favourites: We’ll meet again; The White Cliffs of Dover; A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square and so on and before we knew where we were we started singing.ÌýÌý Then The Queen Mother said, I wonder if you know this song, it’s called ‘Taxi’?ÌýÌý She sang the song, very nicely, and at the end I said to her, Ma’am, I thought I knew all the songs of the Second World War but I never heard that one.ÌýÌý You wouldn’t, she said, it was a hit tune in 1910 – when she was ten years old.

Ìý I mention this because music and song brings us all together, whether you are a Liverpool fan singing, You’ll never walk alone, or in the crowd at the last night of the proms singing, Jerusalem.ÌýÌý Music creates harmony, unity, nostalgia and hope.Ìý I remember when I was a young curate starting a youth club just at the time when the Beatles came to popularityÌý the young people went mad singing, She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah;Ìý I want to hold your hand; Twist and Shout, and so on.Ìý It was full of life, excitement and vigour.Ìý I hope you will sing a song this morning as you go about your daily tasks.Ìý I might sing, Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away – Chris, I think I had better stop!

ÌýÌýÌýÌý I love music and I love songs.Ìý It seems all my life I have been singing, especially, I suppose as a priest, the great hymns. Whether you are a church-going person or not, there is no doubt that hymns have a very special capacity to evoke in us thoughts of praise, mystery and love. Most people enjoy singing hymns whether it is Abide with Me or Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer and many others.Ìý One of my favourites is Praise to the Holiest in the heights and in the depths be praise from The Dream of Gerontius.Ìý They are not only worthy songs they are also means by which we praise God, thanking Him for his goodness and his mercy.Ìý
