It鈥檚 Diwali today, the Hindu festival of lights which celebrates the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. Tonight, Hindus the world over will dress up in their smartest clothes, light lamps and candles, take part in family prayer rituals , and have a great family feast, followed by fireworks, and the exchange of gifts. It鈥檚 a glorious time, especially with the clocks going back this coming weekend. For the time change gives us slightly lighter mornings, though the afternoons and evenings will be dark, just the time for lighting candles and celebrating light.

We Jews have a minor festival of light, Chanukkah, about six or seven weeks on, often just before Christmas. We too light candles and say prayers, exchange gifts- especially for the children- and have a feast. In fact, it鈥檚 a fry up- with doughnuts and potato pancakes, the dieters鈥� nightmare- to celebrate the oil in the lamps, which, according to legend, lasted a miraculous eight days in the Temple when there was only enough for one. Christians have candles too, at Christingle services of course, as well as on the Christmas tree. And in Scandinavia, people celebrate St Lucia鈥檚 day on December 13th, with a young girl wearing a headdress with lighted candles. That鈥檚 probably originally a Viking custom (trust them to live dangerously!)聽 And there again there鈥檚 a big feast.

So these symbols of light, prayer, and rejoicing are universal. As Hindus celebrate the triumph of light over dark, and good over evil, let鈥檚 all take on the theme- because light gives hope, fireworks- even if they frighten our pets- give joy and excitement, and the sharing of food and the giving of gifts makes life worth living. They let us help people in despair find hope, as we cherish them with feasting and gifts. And, as the days get darker, and autumn turns to winter, let鈥檚 all enjoy the lights and the celebrations, mindful that they symbolise the triumph of hope over despair, and we can help bring that triumph about.
