From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 choose your family 鈥� they are God鈥檚 gift to you, as you are to them,鈥� Archbishop Desmond Tutu once told his congregation; and I鈥檝e yet to hear a better description of family at its best.

Family life is in the news these days because Pope Francis has summoned Cardinals, Bishops and a few married couples to Rome to discuss what many believe is the rock on which society survives.

Francis has made a huge impression in less than two years. It鈥檚 typical of him that he鈥檚 chosen family life to begin his reform agenda. He鈥檚 in touch with people. By helping us to think about priceless gifts like commitment, love, children and stability, he brings us back to where we got our start in life.

I believe good parents give children both roots and wings 鈥� roots to know where home is and wings to fly to bigger and better experiences. It鈥檚 where聽 that unique opportunity to be good, positive people comes from.

Pope Francis told church leaders to stop bickering about laws and to concentrate instead on helping decent people cope with the many obstacles working against them in today鈥檚 world.

He knows that parents and families aren鈥檛 perfect. But he prefers to encourage them when they鈥檙e doing their best. He understands what it鈥檚 like to be human.

As a priest I鈥檓 shy about preaching on family life. I really miss not having a family of my own. I think the gurgling laugh of a contented baby must be the holiest sound on earth.

I admire Pope Francis for being more concerned with laughing children than he is with laws which burden struggling couples. He doesn鈥檛 allow the faults of a few to distract him from the goodness of the many. He offers a healing hand to parents whatever their faith, race, culture, tongue or sex.

He believes, as I do, that the family is the most important thing in the world and that a good family is the earliest experience we have of heaven on earth.聽聽
