Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:

Ìý

I was intrigued by the "Shakespeare versus the Rest of the World" item for Radio 2's Book Club Day. The lines from Macbeth which I heard on Monday would have been my personal choice too and I was shouting them out loud as I heard them on air. But this concentration on high culture has made me think of something that I find very frustrating. Why is it that we study all the brilliant stuff of English literature when we’re too young to appreciate or even understand it? I was pondering this just a couple of weeks ago whilst visiting Tintern Abbey, a ruined monastery in the unspeakably beautiful Wye Valley. I found a sunny corner where there were no people to be seen. And, with only the birds to listen to my outpourings, I read a poem by William Wordsworth out loud in the very place that inspired him to write it. My kids would have been so embarrassed. As I read it, it dawned on me that, for all my familiarity with this poem, this might be the first time I'd really got to understand it. It’s all about the need to have lived a life before you can appreciate what life’s all about. Like Wordsworth, and in his words, "I looked on nature not as in the hour of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes the still, sad music of humanity." Saint Paul was on to this. We see things only dimly, he wrote, but one day we’ll catch on. That’s when we’ll know that only three things count – faith, hope and love and that the greatest undoubtedly is love. It’s so obvious isn’t it? Life isn’t a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. It’s about love stupid. So why do we waste so much time before we get it, that’s what I’d like to know?
