Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Abdul-Rehman Malik, journalist and broadcaster:

This summer, during a visit back to my childhood home in suburban Toronto, I reconnected with an old friend. Maybe friend is too strong a word, but certainly a trusty companion. Someone who helped me get around when I needed to and was always there for late night runs to the cornerstore. I鈥檇 like to call her the Pink Panther 鈥 my sister鈥檚 pink bicycle.听

It was my final year of high school and I was without wheels. I was tired of waiting for another unreliable bus or begging for a ride. My sister鈥檚 bike 鈥 unloved and unused 鈥 was just what I needed.

It wasn鈥檛 quite as daring as dressing up like a 鈥渓ady鈥 David, but the sight of a big brown kid on a girl鈥檚 bike was enough to raise some eyebrows and elicit more than a few heckles.

I was always a bit clueless about keeping up appearances. I remember once walking to a neighbour鈥檚 house when I was 11 or 12 and being laughed at by some teenage girls for carrying a bag from one of the low cost stores where we shopped. I was later told by schoolyard friends that they wouldn鈥檛 be caught dead carrying one of their bags. 鈥淚t makes you look poor,鈥 I was told.

My parents never let us want for anything, but I know there were some tough times. The summer that I commandeered the pink bike was particularly hard.

The 18th century mystic Baba Bulleh Shah, in his search for truth became so overwhelmed by the beauty of the cosmos and the astonishing creative power of God that he began to twirl and whirl with joy. 鈥淵our love,鈥 he exclaimed to God, 鈥渉as made me dance like mad.鈥 Dressed in colourful rags and singing frenzied couplets, he must have made quite a scene.

Many mocked his spiritual two-step, but Bulleh Shah was in good company. The prophets, saints and truth-tellers of the past had in their pursuit of mercy and justice overturned more than a few conventions 鈥 and endured worse for it.

I鈥檇 like to think riding around on that pink 10-speed helped me build character. I hope I can teach my son to break the mould. To make a scene, for all the right reasons. The pink bike, of course, is optional.听
