4 Extra Debut. Between 1939 and 1945, cinema box office receipts in Britain tripled. As war dragged on, audiences who had once queued up for patriotic, morale-boosting classics like In Which We Serve were now spending their precious money on escapism and entertainment. And Hollywood knew how to provide it. By 1944, cinema had become a major social phenomenon. But as Jim White discovers, cinema was not simply reflecting the great changes taking place in British society - it had itself become a major force for change.
