Scaling Heights with Alex Jones

Chris chats to Alex Jones about her challenge, climbing Moonlight Buttress in Utah for Sport Relief.

Little Evelyn spreads some warmth when she sings a bit of the Bare Necessities; a song she performed for the very first time at the Grantham Music Festival. She was so good we invited her back for an encore....

Things go a little chilled with our mystery guest who's on hand to help with some defrosting difficulties, she is one of the UK's leading food safety experts, it's Dr. Lisa Ackerley!

Alex Jones goes hot and cold when she tells us about taking to the Shard in preparation for her HUGE challenge climbing Utah's
Moonlight Buttress for Sport Relief...

And that leads us on to the challenge of the top tenuous and your desperate claims to famous climbers, Alex included!

Today's show is dedicated to anyone who woke up early but felt like they'd been asleep all night and then went back to sleep all night only to wake up feeling like they'd just gone to bed.

And today's show is entitled: Little madness keeps you sane!

Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:

Recently, I was in Belfast visiting the wonderful East Belfast Mission in Newtownnards Road. While I was there I heard several people expressing a sense of helplessness in the face of present increased tensions: How can they move forward into a better future when the past, in terms of divisive stories and unresolved fears and injustices, makes working things out in the present so difficult to do?听 As one person put it, 鈥淲e knew how to end the conflict, but we don鈥檛 know how to build the peace.鈥 Getting into conflict is often so much easier, not to say speedier, than getting to grips with its legacy. Think of the people in the Ukraine. I wonder how many of them realised how quickly they鈥檇 progress from street protests to the brink of civil and international war. If we consider the way we deal with daily conflicts in our own lives most of us will have a sense of how hard it is to sort out these less far-reaching fallouts, let alone address the greater impact of civil strife. In the film, 鈥楾he Life of Brian鈥, a listener thinks Jesus says 鈥淏lessed are the cheese-makers,鈥 when in fact he鈥檚 saying one of the most often quoted beatitudes, 鈥淏lessed are the peacemakers.鈥? The sentimental image of a peacemaker is of a calm, wise person who goes in and sorts out other people鈥檚 problems. In reality, the crucial peacemakers are those who have created the conflict in the first place. Unless they鈥檙e willing to change things there are limits to what anyone else can do. It鈥檚 a startling thought that those responsible for what鈥檚 gone wrong play a vital role in putting things right, and may not be the people we鈥檇 choose to bless. Then again, as my friends in Northern Ireland know, when it comes to conflict so many of our expectations are turned upside down. With that in mind, we shouldn鈥檛 be surprised to find unexpected people paving the way of peace.
