Compensation for Rape Victims in Libya
Last week, the Libyan government announced that it听was going to compensate women raped during the 2011 revolution. At the time of the uprising, the International Criminal Court collected evidence that pro-Gadaffi forces were using rape as a weapon of war to spread fear among its opponents. It is a bold move for the government of a conservative Muslim country to recognise women who have been subject to sexual violence in conflict as war victims. But in a country where victims of rape are often ostracised and where discussion of the crime remains taboo, how many women will be willing to come forward and admit that have been raped? Jenni is joined from Libya by Dr Laila Bugaighis 鈥 a human rights activist and Deputy Director of Benghazi Medical Centre 鈥 and by journalist and commentator Nabila Ramdani.听
