Pause For Thought: Ann Easter
From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:
Ìý
It seems very fitting to have Sir Tim Rice here today, in a week when we've been thinking about stories for the 500 Word competition, because one of Tim's best loved and most performed pieces must be the ancient story about Joseph and his multi coloured coat. And then, of course, there's the magnificent Jesus Christ Superstar; loads of people of all ages know the songs from those musicals but I wonder if they realise where the stories actually come from?
Ìý
ÌýA recent survey done by the Bible Society said that perhaps as many as 3 out of ten youngsters can repeat the stories of Noah's Ark and David and Goliath but don't realise that they come from the Bible; some of the children thought that they were from Harry Potter books or television series!
Ìý
There's no doubt that, even now, the Bible forms an integral part of our culture; if we talk about getting there 'by the skin of our teeth' or being 'the apple of someone’s eye'Ìý they're out of the Bible. The syrup tin in my cupboard at home says on the frontÌý 'Out of the strong came forth sweetness'Ìý and that's a quote from the Bible's Book of Judges.
Ìý
We must have millions of other books – yet we're still using the same old Bible words and stories because, I think, there's something in them that rings true with us; we're thousands of years and thousands of miles away from the people and the environments in which those stories are set and yet, of course, people throughout the ages and across the world are the same in so many ways – they fall in and out of love; worry over their children and complain about the weather – it's all in the Bible!
Ìý
I'm glad people know the Bible stories but I want them to go deeper into it because the Bible for me is just the beginning of a love affair with God that makes me want to listen, talk about it and singÌý - a lot!
