Applying for your passport

There are a number of passport renewal websites operating, but they charge you money on top of the cost of the passport itself. Apply online with or you can call 0300 222 0000.

If you’re applying for your first adult passport, it’ll take at least six weeks to arrive, possibly longer between April and September.Ìý You won’t be able to use any fast track services, and you may even be required to attend an interview as part of the application process.

Ìý

If you are renewing or replacing your passport the average processing time is three to four weeks, but again, it may take longer in the summer months.

Ìý

It is possible to fast track a passport renewal, though it is more expensive. However, HM Passport Office will add on up to nine months’ unused validity from your current to your new passport, so you don’t have to wait for it to expire.

Ìý

Many countries also require you to have six months' validity left on your passport on the date you are due to leave these countries, if you do not you could be refused entry. Some countries also require clear, blank pages in your passport. Check before you travel and allow time to apply for a new passport. This is not an issue if you are travelling in Europe.
