The Honours Process

Bill鈥檚 pieces to camera were recorded in the OBE Chapel of St Paul鈥檚 Cathedral. Dedicated in 1960, the chapel marks the founding of the Order of the British Empire by King George V in 1917 to honour the efforts of the public in World War 1.

Every year over 2,000 people are honoured in the New Year and Queen鈥檚 Birthday Honours Lists. The details of nominees and who nominated them are kept strictly confidential. They are considered by nine independent committees which report to a central committee chaired by the Head of The Civil Service, currently Sir Bob Kerslake. The Prime Minister and then Her Majesty The Queen approve the nominations.

Sir Bob explains that anyone can nominate anyone else for an honour. The Cabinet Office are keen to receive more nominations.

The medal-making factory we featured is based in Birmingham鈥檚 Jewellery Quarter.

There are different types of honours representing different kinds of service.
