Script

Good morning.听 Later today in Stockholm and in Oslo, award ceremonies will be held for the winners of the Nobel prizes for physics, chemistry, medicine and literature. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel听instructed that his entire remaining estate should be used for prizes "...to those who, during the preceding year shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind". Since the establishment of the prize in 1901, eight hundred and fifty one laureates and twenty five organizations have been honoured.

This year鈥檚 prize for physics is shared by an English scientist named Peter Higgs, and Francois Englert, a scientist from Belgium. They each proposed independently the theory of a subatomic particle, that creates a universal force field influencing matter. That theory was proved in 2012 with the experiments at the large Hadron Collider in CERN, Switzerland.

Science, Faith and Reason are often portrayed as being in conflict with each other.听听 Three thousand years ago, the writer of Psalm 8 prayed powerfully when he saw the heavens, the work of God's hands. Today, as we give thanks for the awesome achievements of scientists and artists, poets and parents we pray:

Thank you, Lord

For our part in the unfolding of creation.

Yours is the impulse

Which moves us beyond our horizons

In our searching,

Reverence, justice and truth in our discovery.

Amen.
