Advent is marked in different ways around the world. In Mexico, village children dress up as Mary and Joseph and visit a different home each night asking if there鈥檚 room for them to come in. They鈥檙e given welcome and hospitality as they tell the story of their journey to Bethlehem. At my school this Advent we decided to try our own version. Even as I speak, life-size wooden figures of Mary, Joseph and the donkey are travelling around the school, with the staff and students in each department doing special things when the trio are with them. In Music on Monday they sang carols. In Food Tech they鈥檙e going to make and share the kind of Middle Eastern food people like Mary and Joseph might have enjoyed. In PE they鈥檒l be working out a gymnastics routine with the theme, 鈥楲eap of Faith鈥�. Today, while they discuss how we help people who are travelling a difficult road, the students are filling shoe boxes with toys for children who don鈥檛 normally receive presents. And so it goes on. The trouble is, the term has been exceptionally busy, everyone is tired and extra activities like this can feel more like a pressure than a pleasure. More than one colleague has been tempted to say there鈥檚 no room in their particular 鈥榠nn鈥� for these nativity guests. Such is life. In fact, it鈥檚 often the case, and I know that鈥檚 true of me, that when we feel stretched and stressed we can feel less open to the needs of others, or to new ways of understanding or to unlooked-for encounters 鈥� all of which take time and energy we don鈥檛 feel we have. But closing psychological doors to such guests blocks the possibility of unexpected blessings coming into our lives. That鈥檚 why I believe Advent is a time for opening up hearts and minds once more and allowing light to transform our personal blindspots. When that happens, as Christmas reminds us, something new and joyful will come to birth.
