The Faroe Islands new markets
In August 2013, the EU imposed trade sanctions on the Faroe Islands after repeatedly breaching fish quotas. They were refusing permission to export fish to the EU nations and Faroese vessels have been from EU ports except in cases of emergency. As fish makes up most of the Faroe Islands’ exports the move was expected to hit the area hard. But the North Atlantic island group has defied all the odds by seeking new markets further afield. Alasdair Fraser travels to the Faroe Islands to find out how they turned their fortunes around.
