Pause For Thought
From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:
Ìý
I’m so excited to hear about the Dine and Disco and it takes me right back to when my Mum and Dad used occasionally to go to a dinner and dance at my Dad’s work – cue much elaborate hairdressing and sequins – and that was just my Dad! My sister and I would watch the preparations in wonder and look forward to the day when it might be our turn. And, about that time, somewhere in Cambridge, my Christopher, bless him, a thin gangly teenager with size 11 feet, was having dancing lessons at school and he always remembers the end of term dance with real girls when he glanced down at the pale blue shoes of his hapless partner to see that he’d trodden all over them and made the toes black. He vowed never to do ballroom dancing again and so the first dance at our wedding was a folk dance, rather more exuberant and uninhibited – and my shoes remained unmarked!
Ìý
I know that there are some Ìýpeople of faith who feel that dancing, especially if it’s done by women and men together, is somehow improper as it can get too sexy and while I can see their point, I can’t agree with it because, when I see my grandchildren moving around to music before they can even walk, it seems to me a God-given instinctive response and a positive, happy one; somehow, music and dancing are meant to go together.
Ìý
There’s certainly lots of dancing in the Bible, usually when people are happy and free, people often danced in the temple and in processions and certainly when they wanted to express their praise and thanks to God; there’s a lovely story about Jesus going to aÌýÌý wedding with his family – he wasn’t the sort of person to sit out when all his friends were dancing and I reckon he joined in.
Ìý
I suppose like most gifts, dancing’s what you make it – if you do it with love and care, it’s the best thing – and if we can dance and make some money for Children in Need, everyone’s a winner.
