We can always depend on Oscar Wilde to get it right. 鈥滲e yourself,鈥� he advised 鈥淓veryone else is already taken.鈥�

It鈥檚 easier said than done. To be yourself in a world that constantly tries to make you something else is no small achievement. The pressure is to be 鈥渢he best鈥� in everything. Yet striving too hard to be the best, often brings out the worst in us. Trying too hard to appear successful leaves a huge emptiness within.

Last week I had a conversation with a young woman who works in High Finance. She鈥檚 a bright girl, with a gorgeous personality. However she works so hard to achieve impossible targets that she has no time for herself and always feels a failure. The more promotion she鈥檚 rewarded with, the more disconnected from the real world she becomes.

She is completely exhausted, constantly placating her often faceless bosses; her self-esteem is shattered and worse still her unique gifts are wasted.

We worked on a way to help her regain control of her life. She had to decide how many hours she wanted to give to work and how many she needed for rest, a balanced life and space to re-create her best self.

She wrote down some of what I said: Be yourself; originals are always the best.听 Your life is too special to waste on being someone else. And she took comfort from an image I shared in a Sunday sermon. A bird in a tree doesn鈥檛 worry that the branch will break because it trusts in its own ability to fly.

It鈥檚 a constant battle for all of us to survive the pressures of dysfunctional institutions. Whatever you to do, stay in control of your life. Remember no one can take away your pain, so don鈥檛 let anyone take away your joy.

As Marilyn Monroe is reputed to have said:听 "It鈥檚 better to be absolutely ridiculous than to be absolutely boring.鈥�
