Sir Mark Elder, conductor
Sir Mark Elder conducts the opening concert of the ±á²¹±ô±ôé's new season. It begins with Arnold Bax's evocative Cornish seascape Tintagel, a work inspired by the composer's love for the pianist Harriet Cohen and one with telling references to Wagner's great opera Tristan and Isolde.
Alison Balsom joins the orchestra for Haydn's rousing Trumpet Concerto, and the programme also features Barber's soul-searching Adagio for Strings.
Finally, Elgar's touching musical tribute to his wife and friends, the Enigma Variations.
