Benjamin Zephaniah

Benjamin Zephaniah

Benjamin Zephaniah describes himself as a poet, writer, lyricist, musician and trouble maker. Born in Handsworth, Birmingham to Caribbean parents, Benjamin Zephaniah left school at 13 unable to read or write and got involved with street crime. His salvation was his love of poetry which was influenced by what he calls ‘street politics’ and the reggae music of Jamaica. As the best known dubÌýpoet of the 1980s, Zephaniah may have been something of a thorn in the side of the establishment. But todayÌýthis self-styled trouble maker is Professor of Poetry and Creative Writing at Brunel University, holds several honorary doctorates,Ìýand regularly appears as a political and cultural commentator on radio and TV.ÌýÌý
