Teachers have been told to warn pupils about the risks of posting online, after MPs and others received rape and bomb threats. Is trolling a serious threat or a storm in a teacup?

Teachers must do more to educate pupils about the risks of posting online, according to the parenting charity Family Lives.

It comes after a week when journalists, MPs, feminist campaigners and others received a series of abusive tweets including rape and bomb threats.

The historian Mary Beard was one of them - she told us if she met the sender she'd "smack his bottom".

Is that the spirit we should deal with trolls in? Or is this a more sinister problem - which needs more serious punishment?
