In the feature 'Headline News [Number one albums on noteworthy days]' we hear 'Miracles' from the LP 'Red Octopus' by Jefferson Starship. It was number one on 5th September 1975. On this date, Lynette 'Squeaky' Fromme, follower of Charles Manson, attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford, but failed to fire the gun. We also hear 'Not Ready To Make Nice' by Dixie Chicks from their album 'Taking The Long Way 91Èȱ¬'. It was number one on 15th June 2006 - the day on which Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced he would step down in 2008 to concentrate on his charitable activities. In the regular feature 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', tracks are played from albums by Petula Clark and Andrea Bocelli.
In 'A Matter Of Life And Death' Paul celebrates the birthday of Linda Scott by playing her hit 'Don't Bet Money Honey'. We also hear 'Light My Fire' by The Doors, as a tribute to keyboard player Ray Manzarek, who has recently died. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Dream Lover' by Bobby Darin and a different song with the same title by Mariah Carey. Paul continues his countdown of the Top 100 list of songwriters based on success in the American chart from 1955 - 2005. We hear songs written by Burt Bacharach (6) and Lamont Dozier (5).
Our R&B Number Ones are from 1968 and this week by Stevie Wonder and Tamar Braxton. We hear Country number ones from 1980 and now by Ronnie Milsap and Florida Georgia Line. This week's featured past and present Rock number ones are by Peter Gabriel and Imagine Dragons. The week's number one album is by Vampire Weekend. 'Can't Hold Us' by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton is the best-selling song of the week.
