The NHS wants to stop families overriding the wishes of relatives who want to donate their organs after they have died. Last year 125 families overruled relatives who died and were on the organ donation register - that's around 5%. That figure rises to around 45% for families refusing to donate organs from relatives who were either on or off the donor register. The NHS Blood and Transplant, which manages the national voluntary donation system, believes a more firm but polite stance with bereaved families would ensure donors' wishes were more often respected.
