* 31 people have died and more than 300 have been injured in clashes in the Egyptian city of Port Said sparked by the sentencing to death of 21 local people over a football riot last year. 74 people died in fighting between local team Al-Masry and the visitors, Al-Ahly from Cairo.

* The chief inspector of schools is warning that state schools are holding back some of the country's brightest pupils from reaching their full potential. Sir Michael Wilshaw has raised concerns that children who leave primary school with top grades are left to coast by some teachers when they reach secondary school.

* Andy Murray walks onto court in the men's final at the Australian Open against Novak Djokovic.
