The same can be said of a personal life which at times featured copious amounts of sex, drugs and alcohol. He had Hollywood success but it was fleeting because, he says, the movie business remains biased against gay actors. Now he's won a new audience as a writer and he is planning to direct his first film. So has the wildness in Rupert Everett been tamed?
