Middle aged men are far more likely to commit suicide than other group because of the unrealistic standards they measure themselves against. A report commissioned by the Samaritans has found that, while the number of younger men taking their own lives has fallen in recent years, the rise in suicides among men in their thirties, forties and fifties has gone virtually unnoticed. Men between 35 and 54 now account for around half of all the six thousand or so suicides in the UK each year. Economic factors are key, with the research finding some men are unable to cope when faced with a changing job market and when unable to provide for their family or act as the main breadwinner.
