This week the series discovers how the North/South divide, racism, feminism, classism were played out on the sports field. Clare reveals the impact of the split between rugby union and league, the power packed punch of the immigrant boxer fighting for the right to be British and who was allowed to have a bit of a flutter and who wasn't. She looks at the invention of the weekend and the emergence of the middle class which led to an explosion in the genteel sports of tennis and golf.
