David Whiteley investigates cases of false accounting at some sub-post offices. Plus, will theatre therapy help an Alzheimer's-afflicted Essex man?
David Whiteley investigates cases of false accounting in Post Offices. Dozens of sub-post office staff have reported problems with their accounting systems. Some have been convicted of theft or false accounting but claim they have done nothing wrong. Broadcaster Helen McDermott is a member of a remarkable theatre group which produces shows specifically aimed at people with Alzheimer's disease. The interactive play aims to provoke long term memories which can stimulate brain activity. One member of her audience is Bob Tonks from Essex. Three years ago he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It took 18 months to diagnose Bob with the disease, which is the most common cause of dementia, affecting nearly half a million people in the country. The disease affects the way the brain transmits messages and also causes brain cells to die. Although Alzheimer's is incurable, there are ways of slowing down the disease. One is mental stimulation. We find out whether the theatre therapy has helped him.
