Some MPs have accused the government of creating an unofficial amnesty for thousands of asylum seekers as part of efforts to clear a huge backlog of cases.

Ministers say that all they've been doing is sorting out the last government's 'mess' - and bringing the number of outstanding cases down.

But it's also emerged that thousands of asylum seekers have fallen through the cracks of the system - no-one knows where they are or what they might be doing.
