Last year there were almost seven thousand claims of clinical negligence - that includes things like botched operations, people being given the wrong drugs or doctors failing to spot illnesses. 拢787 million was paid out for clinical negligence during 2009/10, up from the year before. But medical charities say too often hospitals put obstacles in the way of victims trying to get apologies or compensation and they want them to be more transparent about mistakes they make.

We hear from Rheagan Hendry, the daughter of former Scotland footballer Colin Hendry. In 2002 her mother Denise had liposuction at a private hospital in Lancashire which went wrong. During the surgery her bowel was punctured nine times.
