Do we need high speed rail?

The consultation into a high speed line between Birmingham and London launches today. But do we need high speed rail or is it a waste of money?

The government has set out the case for a high speed railway saying it'll rejuvenate the economy, close the North-South gap and coax millions of people out of their cars and onto trains.

Opponents say it's too expensive, will tear up the British countryside and disrupt existing services during it's construction. So, do we need high speed rail?

Nicky Campbell takes your calls. Guests include Julie Mills from Greengauge21, a group set up to develop the case for high-speed lines, and transport commentator, Christian Wolmar who would rather see investment in conventional rail instead.
