RET
RET
RET was announced as a pilot scheme which aimed to make it easier and cheaper for people to travel on and off Scotland's islands to the mainland - an easier life for islanders with ferry prices akin to the cost of travelling by road. This year the scheme was extended to run for a year longer than expected, to 2012, to allow analysis of its effects. Many in the Western Isles believe it has been a benefit for them, but with most of the Inner Hebrides excluded from RET, there have been accusations that the scheme is a way of winning votes in the Western Isles. The government says, however, that the Western Isles have the greatest need of the RET scheme. Darren Laing reports from Islay and Uist.
