Phil in Gateshead talking to Olympic hopefuls for Septemberfest; breaking news that the ICC will investigate England's third ODI against Pakistan; violence at Afghan polls.

The big sports stories, news, weather, plus previews of the weekend's sporting events with Rachel Burden and Phil Williams.

Phil Williams presents live from Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club, as he prepares to take part in Sunday's Great North Run. He's joined by local hopefuls for London 2012, gets some tips on long distance running from some of the sport's great names, and in the final half-hour of the programme talks to the great Brendan Foster, the founder of the Great North Run.

Rachel Burden has the rest of the day's news, sport and weather, including Jonathan Agnew on breaking news that the ICC will investigate England's third one day international against Pakistan, and our correspondent Quentin Somerville in Kabul, on violence marring polls in Afghanistan.

There are also updates on Pope Benedict as he sets off for meetings with the leaders of the three largest UK parties, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Harriet Harman. The meetings are part of the third day of his visit to England and Scotland, which will include a mass later in the morning at Westminster Cathedral.
