Several well known politicians have lost their seats, including former Labour Cabinet ministers Charles Clarke and Jacqui Smith. The Liberal Democrats will be without Evan Harris and Lembit Opik and Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson lost his seat.
In Luton South, the broadcaster and journalist, Esther Rantzen, failed in her attempt to get elected as an Independent and Caroline Lucas is the Green party's first MP, winning in Brighton Pavilion.
