St脙漏phane Den脙篓ve conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in a programme of French music: the Requiem by Faur脙漏, Roussel's Symphony No3 and Ravel's La Valse.
Faur脙漏 said of his Requiem, one of the best-loved works in the choral repertoire, ".it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience." Its beautiful tranquillity has allowed many listeners to share in the musical and spiritual comfort of that vision.
Roussel's Third Symphony was premiered by the Boston SO and Koussevitsky in 1930. It is a work of contrasts: the thunderous first movement contrasts with the pastoral melancholy meditation of the Adagio and the fairground sounds of the Vivace, while the tremendous exultation of the last movement prepares the way for the energy of Ravel's La Valse
.
