Le Concert des Nations/Jordi Savall

Presented by Petroc Trelawny. Le Concert des Nations/Jordi Savall in Handel: Water Music Suites 1 and 2; Music for the Royal Fireworks. Marais: Alcione (excerpts).

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

In a concert given as part of the 2009 Edinburgh International Festival, Jordi Savall conducts music by Marais and Handel. Marais has been called the godfather of the viola da gamba, while Savall is regarded as one of the instrument's most famous exponents.

Marais was an important opera composer, and Le Concert des Nations performs ballet music from his opera Alcione. Alongside this are some of Handel's most well-known works - the Water Music suites, first performed in a barge accompanying King George I down the River Thames, and the Music for Royal Fireworks, written at the behest of England's subsequent monarch, George II.
