Postcards
Sandi Toksvig goes to a postcard fair with photographer and collector Martin Parr and discovers what postcards of the past tell us about the history of holidays.
POSTCARDS
For over 100 years picture postcards have been the traditional way for holiday-makers and travellers to let their family and friends at home know what a wonderful time they were having. The Royal Horticultural Halls in Victoria, London were the venue for this year鈥檚 Picture Postcard Show.
At the collectors' fair Sandi Toksvig is joined by photographer Martin Parr, a keen collector, particularly of postcards many of which he has published in his picture books with titles like 鈥淧ostcards鈥 and 鈥淏oring Postcards鈥. He is also well known for his photographs of tourists and the seaside. He and Sandi take a look at the world of postcards. What does the choice and style of the views and the messages sent reveal about Britain's changing social history? They explore what postcards reveal about the way we see places and why they are a must for tourists.
