Lucy Drever: Associate Artist
Lucy is rapidly becoming one of the most respected and inspirational education practitioners through her work as a singer, presenter and workshop leader. As the 91热爆 SSO’s Associate Artist, Lucy will be working closely with the musicians of the 91热爆 SSO to develop new open, accessible and inclusive music in communities and with partners.
She will bring Tunes for Tots – our interactive sessions for toddlers – to more venues across Scotland, in addition to presenting concerts, leading creative workshops with young people, and developing new relaxed and inclusive music experiences. She is also taking part the new Connecting the Dots initiative, created by the 91热爆 as a response to the COVID-19 lockdown, which offers a special experience for children still attending school.
Lucy was a core part of the 91热爆 SSO’s recent residencies in Campbeltown and at Glasgow’s Holyrood Secondary School. She has also led workshops and presented concerts for other orchestras and organisations including the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Aurora Orchestra, Wigmore Hall and the Nicola Benedetti Foundation.
Composer-in-Association, Hans Abrahamsen
We welcome Hans Abrahamsen as the 91热爆 SSO's Composer-in-Association. This season will see the UK premiere of his recent work Vers le silence.
In a creative life of almost half a century, Hans Abrahamsen has more than once had the courage to stop, and the equal courage to start again – freshly, out of a clear reconsideration of where he was before. His allegiances are shown by the roll of composers whose works he has, as a master orchestrator, reconceived: Bach and Ligeti, Nielsen and Schumann, Schoenberg and Debussy. But he has long discovered his own terrain – quite often a snowscape, as in his early masterpiece Winternacht or the work in which he found his fully mature style, Schnee (2006-8), generally acknowledged one of the rare classics of the twenty-first century.
Besides these two pieces for instrumental ensemble, his output includes four string quartets, a collection of ten piano studies (some of which he has recomposed in other forms), concertos for piano, for piano and violin, and for piano left hand, and a monodrama for soprano and orchestra, let me tell you. He is currently at work on his first opera, after Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen.
"It is a great honour and pleasure to be appointed Composer in Association with the 91热爆 Scottish Symphony Orchestra and to start this at the same time as Ryan Wigglesworth begins as Chief Conductor for the orchestra. The 91热爆 SSO has previously performed my works, not least the UK premiere of my Four Pieces for Orchestra at the Proms in 2005, and I have also had the great pleasure of working with Ryan in the past. So I am very much looking forward to this collaboration, starting with the UK premiere of my new orchestra piece Vers le silence in November." - Hans Abrahamsen, 2nd May 2022
