Five essential items no wardrobe should be without
All it takes to improve your confidence is a little bit of fashion magic. You Are What You Wear’s celebrity stylists show you how easy it is to get your style just right with a few, well chosen items.
On the 91热爆 One programme the panel ‘made over’ all sorts of people: from leisurewear-loving ladies to men with zero interest in fashion.
If you’re in need of a few tips, here are five of their must-have wardrobe items:
1. A blazer
How to choose the perfect blazer
The stylists explore different styles of blazers.
There were many items that turned heads and surprised the You Are What You Wear ‘style squad’, says stylist Lucie Clifford.
But: “a blazer is THE must-have wardrobe item,” says stylist Kat Farmer, “a really good blazer, works with EVERYTHING, from dresses to jeans, at work through to a night out.”
Lucie’s favourite was client Mel’s monochrome zebra print blazer – a ‘style shocker’ when it was revealed.
“People assume that ‘plus size’ shouldn’t wear statement pieces or prints – and that is completely the wrong assumption,” Lucie explains.
“A bold print can create a flattering and confident silhouette, drawing the eye toward a body part we want to emphasise and the zebra print ruched-sleeve blazer certainly did its job. Mel and the team loved it!,” she says.
Want to do it differently? Stylist Joey Bevan went for a slightly different vibe - putting PE teacher and leisurewear enthusiast Rachel in an electric blue suit and red heels.
A sports chic makeover for PE teacher Rachel
Which stylist is waiting in the wings to help Rachel swap gym wear for glamour?
He says: “Rachel looked incredible - I think everyone was expecting me to put her in a dress.. but I wanted to play on her love for a masculine silhouette, but still ultra-glam and sexy... (she went) from wearing nothing but sportswear to a chic, stunning look – with of course my favourite 80s vibes – and not one bit of blue eyeshadow anywhere!”
2. Blue denim jeans
Shouldn’t every wardrobe include a great pair of blue denim jeans?
“Whether you like a mom, boyfriend, high waisted, super skinny, or a kick-flare jean, denim is everyone’s best friend,” says Lucie. “Versatile, comfortable and super stylish, no matter what age, shape or size... a great fitting pair of jeans will be a staple in anyone’s wardrobe.”
And not just for women, men get to rock denim in You Are What You Wear too.
“Every man needs at least one good pair of jeans, but you have to remember it’s all about fit,” says Darren Kennedy. His top tips? “Say no to bootcut and flares and wave goodbye to spray-on skinny.”
Stylist Joey Bevan has another trick to make denim pop. “For me it’s a tie between a good white t-shirt or dark denim jeans: they go with everything,” says Joey. “Male, female or (if you identify) anywhere in-between, these two items will be the perfect staple for any wardrobe, style or person.”

3. A good leather jacket
Leather jackets have been around since the early 1900s, and they never go out of fashion. These days you can also find fashionable ‘pleather’ versions if you’re against using or wearing animal products.
Stylist Nana Acheampong says she’s had her vintage oversized leather jacket for about five years and: “it's still one of my absolute favourite items”.
Nana says: “I think every wardrobe should have a leather jacket as it can be worn season after season, with so many different looks. I use mine to dress up and dress down outfits.
“I think my final look with (military wife) Lauren was a surprise, as the panel probably expected me to put her in an uber-feminine dress.
“Instead she was in a bright bold jumpsuit and leather jacket, miles away from looking like a military wife. She looked totally badass!” she adds.
4. Breton striped top
Some items are just timeless and will never go out of fashion.
Stylist Darren Kennedy thinks you should: “make like a Parisian in a timeless Breton stripe top”.
Breton stripes first became de rigueur in France when a wool version was adopted by French sailors to keep them warm and dry in the 1800s.
These days the stripe can be found in a multitude of colours to rival the classic navy.
Some think a horizontal stripe can be unflattering, but Darren has a piece of advice to always make it work: “I would suggest wearing this style a little looser on the body, as it looks instantly more chic.”
And how to top this look off? “Donning a trench coat is another easy way to inject some serious old-school style into any outfit – it’s an ageless classic.”
5. A camel coat
Keeping with coats, and one for men looking to dress a bit snappier.
Michael wore a camel coat as the centrepiece of his final outfit and it was a game-changer. Stylist Darren says: “he looked a million dollars - and felt it too”.
What makes it a must-have?
“A camel coat offers grown-up sophistication and works equally well over formal or casual wear. It’s a statement piece that certainly doesn’t need to be shackled with suits or formal wear,” he says.
Best of all, it goes with anything. Colour-block jeans, polos, t-shirts, slim-cut wool trousers and pumped-up trainers will bring freshness to this modern classic.
In an age when fast fashion is frowned upon, Darren Kennedy’s advice is simple: “when shopping for a camel coat, choose carefully and you’ll have a solid wardrobe investment that you’ll get years of wear out of.” And who doesn’t like the sound of a good investment piece? Nice one.
