1. Sir Elton John - Pyramid Stage, 21:00
You’d think that an artist with the decades of success and superstardom that Sir Elton John has under his belt wouldn’t have many musical firsts left. But believe it or not, Elton has never performed at Glastonbury Festival - that is, until now.
Elton’s closing Pyramid set at Glastonbury this year is sure to be extremely special. It falls towards the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour - a tour which initially was planned to be three years long, starting in 2018, but thanks to the global pandemic it was paused and postponed, and is now set to end in early July.
He’s hinted in interviews that the setlist is very different to his tour setlist, and that he’ll be bringing on some special guests. With his wealth of famous musical friends, who knows what exciting artists he’ll bring on? All bets are off for this performance - we don’t know what to expect, but we know it will be spectacular.
2. Caroline Polachek - Woodsies, 20:00
Caroline Polachek started releasing music back in 2007 as part of the indie band Chairlift, and she started a solo project in 2013 called Ramona Lisa, but it was only in 2019 that she released an album under her own name.
Having spent more than a decade making music by this point, it shouldn’t be surprising that Caroline’s debut album Pang was so polished and unusual and sophisticated, but it makes for an astonishing listen nonetheless. The album was critically acclaimed, and the single So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings in particular started to garner a lot of attention.
Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, her second record, came out this year, and with it she became one of 2023’s most exciting artists. Her style of alternative pop music feels even more intentional and cohesive on this album, and it’s irresistible to dance along to, especially when her own dance moves are so impressive. She's a mesmerising performer, and this performance is sure to be one of the most talked-about sets of the day.
3. Lil Nas X - Pyramid Stage, 19:00
Lil Nas X last performed at Glastonbury as a surprise guest during Miley Cyrus’ 2019 set. It was soon after the release of his stratospheric remix of Old Town Road with Billy Ray Cyrus, and she brought out her father and Lil Nas X to perform it on the Pyramid Stage. He paid homage to her during the set by wearing a t-shirt with her face on it, as you can see above.
But this time he’s back on the hallowed stage on his own terms. He’s continued to release hugely successful music ever since, including his debut album MONTERO, which came out in 2021. He’s also made a name for himself on social media for his sense of humour, particularly on Twitter, and for being outspoken against homophobia - he came out as gay in 2019 while Old Town Road was top of the charts, becoming the first artist to do so while having a Number 1 record.
He’s known for being a brilliant, charismatic performer, and for wearing fantastic, creative outfits during his sets, so we are expecting his Pyramid slot to be visually and sonically outstanding.
4. Barrington Levy - West Holts, 18:15
This is a rare opportunity to see one of the greats of Jamaican reggae and dancehall performing in the UK. Barrington Levy first started releasing music in 1979 at the age of just 15, and rose to prominence in the early 1980s, swiftly becoming one of Jamaica’s biggest stars.
He’s a prolific writer and and to date he’s released 35 albums (his 2016 album Acoustalevy was nominated for a Grammy), with an unbelievably long back catalogue of hits under his belt. Over the course of his career he’s worked with countless artists, including Rebel MC, Snoop Dogg and Gorillaz.
This is definitely not one to miss - it’s impossible not to dance along to his feel-good energy, and it’s a chance to see an icon at work.
5. Yusuf / Cat Stevens - Pyramid Stage, 15:15
Taking the coveted legends slot this year is Yusuf Islam, who you may know by his stage name Cat Stevens. Yusuf / Cat Stevens is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who is particularly renowned for his gift for storytelling within his music, and his knack for writing accessible, universal lyrics.
He has sold more than 100 million records and his career spans more than 50 years - his debut album Matthew And Son came out in 1967, and his seventeenth album King Of A Land was released this year.
To still be making music at the age of 74 is impressive within itself, but the breadth of genres and styles he has covered in his music over the years is an incredible achievement. His real legacy comes with the success of his most beloved songs, such as The First Cut Is The Deepest, Wild World, and Moonshadow. And we recommend having your tissues ready for Father And Son - there won’t be a dry eye in the house!
