The New Radio 2 Arts Show With Claudia Winkleman

Friday 8 October
10.00pm-12.00midnight 91Èȱ¬ RADIO 2

In this week's Arts Show Penny Smith sits in for Claudia Winkleman and speaks to renowned music producer William Orbit about his new album, Pieces In A Modern Style 2, the follow-up to Pieces In A Modern Style, which produced the hit Adagio For Strings. The new project features more of Orbit's interpretations of classical standards.

The programme also finds out more about the British Museum's new exhibition China: Journey To The East. China's long history of innovation in the arts has created one of the most important and influential civilisations in world history. The major new exhibition in Manchester will combine objects from the British Museum with stories from one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

Also British film is celebrated with critic James Kleinmann, plus Penny speaks to graffiti pioneer Nick Walker about his new solo show In Gods We Trust. Nick is known for pushing the boundaries of street art – working with many different media, frequently moving between the gallery and the streets and giving a rare insight into the secret world of "high end" street art.

A History Of The World In 100 Objects Ep 20/30

Monday 4 to Friday 8 October
9.45-10.00am 91Èȱ¬ RADIO 4

Neil MacGregor concludes a week of considering the world of discovery in the 18th century.

He describes what was happening in China during this period, as the country was experiencing its own Enlightenment under the Qianlong Emperor.

Today he tells the story of the Chinese Enlightenment through a jade ring (called a Bi) that was probably made around 1500BC and then written over during the Qing dynasty.

Historian Jonathan Spence and poet Yang Lian find meaning in this intriguing object and explore what the prehistoric piece of jade tells us about life in 18th-century China.

Afternoon Play – Maidens' Trip

Friday 8 October
2.15-3.00pm 91Èȱ¬ RADIO 4

Maidens' Trip follows the adventures of three 18-year-old girls who signed on with the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company to replace workers drafted overseas.

Quite literally thrown in at the deep-end, Emma, Charity and Nanette embark on their maiden voyage carrying steel north by canal from London to Birmingham. They surmount the dangerous, back-breaking work thanks largely to an endearing mix of youthful bravado and blissful ignorance. As they steer their way through the "other world" of the boat people, the girls, often out of their depth, face up to an assortment of challenges with courage and good cheer.

The cast stars Greta Scacchi in the role of Tilly; Emma Wachter as Emma; Emerald O'Hanrahan as Charity; Georgia Groome as Nanette; Rufus Wright as Wilfred; Sean Baker as Mr Silver; and Lloyd Thomas as Eli Silver.

Maidens' Trip is written by Emma Smith and dramatised for radio by David Ashton.

91Èȱ¬ WORLD SERVICE Friday 8 October 2010

The City That Sacked Its Staff

Friday 8 October
8.00-8.30pm 91Èȱ¬ WORLD SERVICE

In July 2010, in the midst of the financial crisis, Maywood, a small city down the highway from Los Angeles, took the radical step of laying off almost all of its city employees.

Policing in Maywood was handed over to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and other city services were outsourced to the nearby city of Bell. According to Mayor Ana Rizo, it was either this step or bankruptcy.

Presented by Simon Pitts, the programme examines how best to run modern cities, meets with local residents and the Latino community affected and often disenfranchised by the changes and talks to policy professionals who have deep reservations about contracting the private sector to run a city.
