Rev – Tom Hollander plays the Rev Adam Smallbone

Tom Hollander as Rev Adam Smallbone

The Rev Adam Smallbone is a Church of England vicar, newly promoted from a sleepy rural parish to the busy, inner-city world of St Saviour's, in East London. It's a world he has little experience of – and it shows.

Every day throws up a moral conflict for Adam. His door must always be open – to urban sophisticates with ulterior motives, the chronically lonely, the lost, the homeless, the poor and the insane. All are welcome at St Saviour's and Adam can't turn any of them away – even if they're clearly lying, mad or just very annoying.

Tom Hollander co-created Rev with James Wood and they previously worked together on Freezing (directed by Simon Curtis).

He began his acting career in theatre, working with Cheek by Jowl (As You Like It), at the Almeida with Jonathan Kent (Tartuffe, The Government Inspector and King Lear); with Ian Rickson at the Royal Court (he played Baby in the original production of Jez Butterworth's Mojo); for the Donmar Warehouse (Macheath in The Threepenny Opera, directed by Phyllida Lloyd; and Laurie in The Hotel in Amsterdam).

On Broadway he played Lord Alfred Douglas in David Hare's The Judas Kiss opposite Liam Neeson and, most recently, appeared in Joe Penhall's Landscape With Weapon at the National Theatre.

Tom has made many appearances in film and on television, including Pirates Of The Caribbean; Robert Altman's Gosford Park; Pride & Prejudice (directed by Joe Wright); The Libertine; The Lawless Heart; A Good Year (directed by Ridley Scott); The Soloist (directed by Joe Wright); George V in Stephen Poliakoff's The Lost Prince; and Guy Burgess in Cambridge Spies.

He recently played the bullied minister, Simon Foster, in Armando Iannucci's In The Loop and, on television, he played Monty Banks in Gracie! with Jane Horrocks, for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at this year's television Bafta awards.

Tom is currently filming Hanna, for Joe Wright, with Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan.
