The Moaning Stones
There are four moaning stones sitting permanently wedged in the sand on the beach. One is buried so deep and is crumbling so much that it is barely recognisable. One is permanently asleep. The other two are Gravel and Granite, a kind of prehistoric Odd Couple! Gravel is funnier, sillier and generally more upbeat. Granite, on the other hand, is more straight-faced and slightly cynical. They watch the action from afar, making terrible jokes before joining the Big Zing with big bass doo-wops or simply humming along.
Todd
Todd is the island's eccentric odd-job man and inventor. He's responsible for the upkeep of the island and he can usually fix most things – even in his slightly bumbling, incompetent way. Inside his cave is a wonderful place packed with inventions, contraptions and several incomplete half baked schemes! Todd is always working on a project and when the ZingZillas need something unusual built to help them, Todd will always try and throw something together. He often joins in with the Big Zing as an enthusiastic spectator as well as occasionally performing – for a Mandrill so clumsy, he is a surprisingly good dancer and opera singer!
DJ Loose
DJ Loose runs the Coconut Hut on the beach where the band and their friends congregate and listen to his wise advice. He is flamboyant, knowledgeable and passionate having worked in the music industry since the invention of the blues and before. He has seen everything and knows everyone.
He is able to explain to the band the many various forms of music, leading them to the glade to hear each guest musician play. He's like the band's musical mentor. DJ Loose is also MC for the Big Zings. He introduces the show but can also work the decks should he need to.
The Beach Byrds – Maxine, Patti & Laverne
The Beach Byrds work as waitresses at the Coconut Hut, popping up from behind the counter singing in glorious, twittery harmony. They are constantly tripping over each other, dashing round in a flurry of feathers and getting carried away at the Juice Bar. But for each Big Zing, they don their best spangly dresses and provide the backing vocals.
