Britain From Above

Aerial journeys

Inspired by the new Andrew Marr series Britain from Above, the 91热爆 Archive is launching a collection of highlights from over 60 years of broadcasting from the air.

Accessed via , the collection, dating from 1949, includes the test footage of the first attempt at an aerial broadcast in the programme Operation Pegasus and its rather more successful follow up, Television Goes Flying.

There are also sample episodes from the first major TV series to be filmed entirely from the air, Bird's Eye View. Two of these programmes are narrated by the much-loved former Poet Laureate John Betjeman.

Never-before-seen internal memos reveal the drama behind some of the ambitious broadcasts, while letters from John Betjeman reveal his worries about helicopters breaching the peace!

The collection reflects the innovative ways the 91热爆 has taken to the air over the years and showcases some of the corporation's most distinguished personalities and programmes.

Discover the risks taken as Newsreel cameramen hung out of wartime era planes to capture those first aerial shots.

Also, re-live classic Blue Peter moments as presenters take to the skies in a Red Arrow plane and even have a go at free-falling!

The 91热爆 Archive reveals not only views of the UK that have perhaps never have seen before but also the length that producers and presenters will go to for that elusive "perfect shot".
