Record total and record auction bid donated by
Radio 2 listeners for 91Èȱ¬ Children in Need

A record £2,514,579 has been raised by generous
91Èȱ¬ Radio 2 listeners for this year's 91Èȱ¬ Children in Need Appeal.

Ìý

A quarter of a million pounds came in the form of a record bid in the Things That Money Can't Buy auction on Sir Terry Wogan's breakfast show, for a concert performed by Katie Melua and Aled Jones.

Ìý

Chris Evans' Drivetime auction and a Music Marathon were also part of the network's week-long round of fundraising activities.

Ìý

Radio 2's grand total also includes £1,021,143 from the sales of the Janet & John Reloaded CD, produced by Terry's listeners The TOGS.

Ìý

Sir Terry says of Things That Money Can't Buy auction: "Every year we think the British public can't be more generous than they were last year.

Ìý

"The total last year was in excess of half a million pounds and this year's total is £894,000.

Ìý

"It is a privilege to be part of this – and humbling too."

Ìý

The auction received its biggest-ever phone pledge when Martin Ainscough from Wigan bid £250,000 for a performance by Katie Melua and Aled Jones.

Ìý

VIP passes to the British Grand Prix next year fetched £100,000, and tickets to Led Zeppelin's reunion concert and the chance to see them in rehearsals went for £83,000.

Ìý

A lunch date with Sir Terry and Sir Roger Moore raised £75,000, and five days at the internationally-renowned Raymond Blanc Cookery School, Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons in Oxford, and an exclusive evening's tuition with Blanc himself raised £40,000.

Ìý

Chris Evans held an auction during his Radio 2 Drivetime show, raising £231,019.

Ìý

Chris offered a chance for 40 people, with a friend each, to play golf at a course in Surrey before going to his pub to enjoy food cooked by Giorgio Locatelli, wine chosen by Oz Clarke, a live performance by Drivetime favourites The Proclaimers, a pub quiz courtesy of the programme's Jonny Saunders and a disco hosted by Chris.
